Reference date: 2 November 2026 — ESA report; exact demonstration date not specified

A small Greek satellite has established an optical connection with the Holomondas ground station, ESA reported on 2 November. ERMIS-3 was developed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, while the ground station was developed by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The demonstration used Lithuanian company Astrolight’s optical terminals. ESA says the link tested the precise pointing and continuous tracking needed to connect a moving satellite with a narrow laser beam.

The agency contributed testing and alignment expertise through the Greek National Space Programme. Clouds and atmospheric turbulence remain challenges for optical connections. This is a reported in-orbit demonstration, rather than proof of an uninterrupted operational communications service.
